We are straight up fan-girl tickled pink to be promoting Sarah Bessey’s new book, Out of Sorts, released this week!
Sarah has written this book in a style she calls “narrative theology” a poetic mash up of personal story telling and Bible truth. Which for me is a lovely combo as I highly value the study of the Bible but need to hear the real life working out of it. She flattens the playing field for all us by her raw honesty with the things she feels “out of sorts” with. You will find your own questions and bones you have to pick with the Church aired out. Most of the time you will find them still flapping on the line but the picture is scenic and peaceful. Which I think is a rather remarkable thing the book does, it offers oodles of grace to just be where you are with things. There is a lot of room in God’s house for wanderers and Sarah extends that same welcome to the reader in this book too.
My favourite quote is from the chapter Be a Person: On community and friendship.
I, personally, have been needing to hear encouragement about the discipline of staying put and showing up in this particular season my husband and I have found ourselves in. Sarah also simplifies the task by reminding me to just be a person. A person who is in the throws of working it all out, messing up and plugging along in life just like the next person.
The particularly beautiful thing that Sarah has done with this book is allow us to let it all hang out. To let transformation and change in response to Christ be ok, a needed thing. Even in the ugly cries while your working out the questions and pain and learning how to do things new, there is freedom. It’s going to be a long continuation of this process, working out what it means to follow Christ. We need each other to be there through it all saying “it’s ok to be out of sorts”.
So, you should read it. Really. Go get yourself and copy and treat your heart to a dose of real life and find the freedom to be out of sorts.
