Today is Christmas, when the fifth advent candle is lit, the Christ Candle.
We can reflect back on the weeks that have led up to this. Advent is about the preparing, the waiting, the anticipating the arrival of Jesus. A saviour. A friend.
He is the one we can place our hope in, the only one who won’t fail us.
He calls us to trust him, he knows it will lead us to peace.
He weaves our days with glimpses of heaven and moments of joy that we need to watch out for or we can miss them.
He delights in our simple faithfulness. Not done out of routine and monotony, but out of a heart that takes pride in all our tasks and does them unto the Lord.
He is a gift to us. The gift of love. The gift we don’t deserve but the one that is showered over us.
And today we light a white candle to symbolize the lamb of God, the only sacrifice that could suffice.
We can’t just snuff out this candle and leave the story there. He didn’t come to save us, give us hope, peace, joy and love – and have the story end. Now the story continues, with our part. We have been called to carry on the light. To shine with all that God has made us to be, to glow with the love of Jesus, so all the world can see how great He is.
You are the light of the world. You cannot hide a city that is on a mountain. Men do not light a lamp and put it under a basket. They put it on a table so it gives light to all in the house. Let your light shine in front of men. Then they will see the good things you do and will honour your Father Who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
We are to answer this call to be a light. When we have Jesus in us, we cannot lose this light. . . .but perhaps we sometimes cover it up, hide it in the corner, let it lay idle and useless.
There is no grand preparations that we need to be a simple light shining. Right now, where you are, how you are, what you are, all that you have been is part of your story and your calling to share the light of Jesus with the world. When we share our story we share his story.
From the simple every day life we share with our co-workers, to the deep issues we are facing in our families, to the regular updates we post to the online world of friends and strangers. Dust off that light, pull it out of the corner and let your story radiate the glory of how God has worked in your life. When we share our light, we share His light.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
